Onion and Honey Cough Syrup

Use
1 medium onion, thinly sliced; 1/2 cup raw honey; 1 clean glass jar.
Make
Put the sliced onion in a clean glass jar. Pour the honey over the onion until it is covered. Let it sit 8 to 12 hours, until the onion gives up its juice.
Take
Take 1 teaspoon every 2 to 3 hours to soothe a cough.
Keeps
Keeps 3 to 4 weeks in a glass jar in the fridge.
Care
Honey: never for a baby under 1 year old. For children, ask the doctor first. With diabetes or blood-sugar pills, ask your doctor how much honey is fine.

Every one of the 433 remedies in this book is written like Mae's card.

"How much honey, Mama?"

Three winters ago my son called from town with a cough that kept his whole house up. He wanted my onion syrup. "How much honey, Mama? How long do I leave it?"

I opened my mouth to tell him, and realized I had never once measured it. Neither had my mother. A spoon of this, a handful of that, "you'll know when it's right."

That winter I started writing it all down, with the amounts.

It took three winters of evenings at the kitchen table. This book is what came of them.

Mae at her kitchen counter with garlic, ginger, lemon and honey

    Hello, it's Mae.

If you've watched me on YouTube, this is the book I keep mentioning.

I keep a big herb garden on our farm, and I still do most of what my mother and grandmother did. When somebody in my house starts coughing, I don't go looking for a recipe. I go to the pantry.

Some of the remedies in this book are mine. Some were my mother's and grandmother's. Some came from neighbors, and from the old books I've gathered over the years. I kept the plain ones you can make from what's in the house, and I wrote every one down the way I wish someone had handed it to me.

I'm not a nurse, and I'm glad for good doctors. Not one of these remedies will make a cold go away faster, and my grandmother never said they would. What they do is make the hard days easier. And the book always tells you when it's time to pick up the phone.

    Mae

    Questions people ask me

    Is it a printed book?

No, it's a PDF. You download it the minute you pay, and the link comes to your email too. Read it on a tablet or computer, or print only the pages you use. The Remedy Finder and the 30 kitchen cards are made to print.

How do I get it after I pay?

Right away. After you pay, a page opens with a button to download the book, and the same link comes to your email. No paper book comes in the post, so there is nothing to wait for. If the email doesn't come, look in your spam folder, then write to me at hello@maesremedybook.com and I'll send it myself.

Can I read it on my phone?

Yes, on a phone, a tablet or a computer. You can make the print as big as you like with two fingers. Most people find a tablet or a printed page easiest at the stove.

I'm not good with computers. Can I still get it?

Yes. After you pay, an email comes with one button. Tap it and the book opens. If you get stuck, write to me and I'll walk you through it.

    Do I need special herbs?

No. Most remedies use what's already in your kitchen: honey, onion, garlic, ginger, salt, baking soda, castor oil, and the herbs you can grow. When one needs something else, the page gives you a swap you can buy in town.

I take pills. Is this for me?

Yes. If you take medicine for blood pressure, blood sugar or a blood thinner, the remedies that matter say what to ask your doctor first, and there's a page about it at the back.

    Is this medical advice?

No. These are old home remedies that ease, soothe and help. They don't replace your doctor, and every remedy says when to call one.

Can I share it with my family?

Yes. Print copies for your own family, or send the file to your daughter. Please don't post it online.

    Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once and the book is yours.

What if it isn't for me?

Write to me within 30 days and every dollar comes back. You don't have to explain, and you keep the book.

One day someone will ask, "How did Grandma make that?"

This time, the answer will be written down.
